What is a Virtual National Identification Number (vNIN)?

vNIN is a temporary digital code that represents your NIN. Think of it as a temporary password that helps protect your real NIN from exposure when you need to verify your identity.

What is the difference between NIN and vNIN?

  • NIN is your permanent identification number that contains your personal information.

  • vNIN is a temporary code that hides your real NIN when you need to verify your identity.

  • Using vNIN is like using a temporary password instead of sharing your actual password.

Why vNIN?

  1. Enhanced Privacy & Security – vNIN protects your NIN by providing a temporary, encrypted alternative, keeping your information safe.

  2. Fraud Prevention – vNIN reduces identity theft risk by preventing direct NIN sharing with third parties.

  3. Seamless Verification – Many institutions accept vNIN for KYC, making verification easy and efficient.

  4. Time-Saving – Speeds up authentication by skipping physical ID checks.

How do I generate my vNIN?

There are two ways to get your virtual NIN (vNIN). The first option is to use the NIMC Personal Mobile App, while the second option is via a USSD code (Dial *346*3# on your registered mobile phone number). You can also learn more here.

❗NB: Generating a vNIN via USSD attracts a NGN 20 charge, but don't worry, we will reimburse you after you successfully verify your account.

Will a new vNIN token be generated each time, or is it reusable?

  • New Token Each Time: A new vNIN is generated for every request.

  • Valid for 72 Hours: The token expires after 72 hours or once used.

  • If Verification Fails:

    • The token stays valid for 72 hours if a network issue occurs.

    • You can retry without generating a new one.

  • Re-verification: Verified users can generate a new token if needed.

  • NIMC App vs. USSD Tokens:

    • Tokens from the NIMC app and USSD are different.

    • You can use either as long as you generate the OTP.

  • One-Time Use: Each token can only be verified once. A new one is needed for another attempt.

Is the vNIN at a cost?

  • USSD: Generating a vNIN via USSD attracts a NGN 20 charge, but don't worry, we will reimburse you after you successfully verify your account.
